The importance of transferable skills in a job transition and how to use them to land your dream job?

Why transferable skills matter in career transition?

Transferable skills are often referred as “soft skills,” a term that contrasts with “hard skills” or “technical skills". As a result, many get the impression that transferable skills are less important. Unfortunately it couldn’t be further from the truth. In real life, employees with strong transferable skills have been recognised to increase companies productivity and overall profits.

Identifying your transferable skills

Punctuality, problem solving, empathy, public speaking, negotiation and accountability are only a few from a long list of soft skills that are highly valuable in terms of employability. As individuals we sometime take for granted many of those skills that we are developing naturally over the time. But this is precisely what will differentiate us from the other candidates in our job search and in our success. Working with a coach helps creating self awareness and uncovering blind spots that we might have.

How to use them in your job search?

After having identified what you are good at, you can think about which qualities are the most useful in the job you are applying for. Make sure to display your talents during the process by using your curriculum vitae and cover letter paying attention to details, organisation and layout. Be prepared to illustrate your skills during the interview(s) and ensure both punctuality and an appropriate presentation. It is as well a good time to display your talents, for instance as a listener, communicator or as a negotiator. #coaching #success #future
